What We Do

The Cato Institute is a public policy research organization - a think tank - dedicated to the principles of individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace. Its scholars and analysts conduct independent, nonpartisan research on a wide range of policy issues.

In an era of sound bites and partisanship, Cato remains dedicated to providing clear, thoughtful, and independent analysis on vital public policy issues. Using all means possible - from blogs, Web features, informative direct mail, op-eds and TV appearances, to conferences, research reports, speaking engagements, and books - Cato works vigorously to present citizens with incisive and understandable analysis.

T.W. Lewis Foundation Support

The T.W. Lewis Foundation supports the Cato Institute's efforts to expand liberty and prosperity through state-level reforms, specifically through the biennial publications Fiscal Policy Report on America's Governors and Freedom in the 50 States: An Index of Personal and Economic Freedom. Support from the T.W. Lewis Foundation will help to marry these two products with the Cato Institute's vision for an expanded digital strategy.

Testimonials

"It's one thing to talk about the ideas of liberty - and that's important - but it's another thing to build an institution that protects those ideas from partisan politics and still advances human freedom." - Ethelmae Humphreys, Chairman of TAMKO Building Products Inc.

"So many policy institutes seem to me to be tied to one partisan view or another, and I think the intellectual integrity of the Cato Institute is what makes it so great. It's nonpartisan, it focusses on ideas, and it defends those ideas with evidence." - James Kilts, former CEO of The Gillette Company
