Positive Coaching Alliance to Launch Phoenix Operation

National non-profit supported locally by Tom Lewis and the T.W. Lewis Foundation

Tempe, AZ – February 15, 2012 – Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) -- a national non-profit committed to providing all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience – is establishing a PCA-Phoenix chapter with major financial support from Tom Lewis and the T.W. Lewis Foundation.

“Thanks to Tom Lewis and the T.W. Lewis Foundation, the youth of Phoenix will benefit from character development through sport,” said Jim Thompson, PCA’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer. “Our training, which results in youth learning life lessons from sports as they compete, comprises three models: the Double-Goal Coach®, whose first goal is winning, and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports; the Second-Goal Parent®, who concentrates on life lessons, while letting coaches and athletes focus on competing; and the Triple-Impact Competitor®, who strives to impact sport on three levels by improving oneself, teammates and the game as a whole.”

PCA’s Double-Goal Coach training for youth and high school sports coaches occurs through a combination of live group workshops for all the coaches of a partnering school or youth sports organization, online courses that complement the live training, books by PCA Founder and Chief Executive Officer Jim Thompson, and follow-up electronic communications that reinforce the training year-round. PCA provides similar tracks of training for sports parents, student-athletes, and school or organizational leaders.

T.W. Lewis Foundation will provide a matching grant over three years to ensure a successful start to the PCA-Phoenix operation. “We are excited to help this quality organization get started in Phoenix and believe that it will make a big positive impact on youth sports throughout the Greater Phoenix area,” said Tom Lewis.

About Positive Coaching Alliance

PCA was founded as a non-profit within the Stanford University Athletic Department in 1998, and has conducted more than 10,000 live group workshops nationwide for more than 475,000 youth and high school sports coaches, parents, student-athletes and school/organizational leaders. Through workshops and companion online courses, PCA has impacted more than 4 million youth.

The partnership network of PCA includes more than 1,700 youth sports organizations, cities and schools. In 2012, PCA will conduct roughly 1,200 live, group workshops across the U.S., while assisting tens of thousands of other individuals via online courses at www.PositiveCoach.org.

PCA has local offices in the San Francisco Bay area, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Sacramento with plans for Denver and Phoenix. Regional offices are located in Hawaii, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Washington DC. Jan and Tom Lewis Desert Portal

at the Desert Botanical Garden

The Desert Botanical Garden, www.dbg.org, recently completed a new master plan for the Core Trail which includes renovations, expansions and new installations along the Garden’s main trail. A lead gift from Jan and Tom Lewis through the T.W. Lewis Foundation will make the very first project possible.

The Jan and Tom Lewis Desert Portal will be the central hub of the Core Trail and a key location for orienting people to the entire Garden experience. It will offer shaded seating beneath a trellis structure and provide a new gathering space for tours and intimate gatherings.

The design phase of the project will continue through 2012 and construction is expected to begin in summer, 2014.

Foundation History

T.W. Lewis and its associates have always been committed to giving back to the community. For as long as T.W. Lewis has been building dream homes, the company and its associates have helped other dreams to be realized, namely by contributing time and money to various child- and education-related causes.

In 2000, company owner Tom Lewis and his wife Jan decided to establish the T.W. Lewis Foundation as the next logical step in corporate responsibility and citizenship. "Charitable giving is an obligation of success," states Mr. Lewis. "The establishment of the T.W. Lewis Foundation has allowed us to focus our efforts, and therefore we have a greater impact on those issues that are important to us."

The T.W. Lewis Foundation receives approximately 10% of the company's pre-tax profits. Tom and Jan Lewis, together with their three sons Tom Jr., John and Michael and T.W. Lewis associates are involved in the activities of the Foundation.
